Upgrading Course for Chief & Second Engineers

Objective: To enable Chief/Second Engineers to demonstrate their ability to undertake management level tasks, duties and responsibilities.

Duration: Twenty-Four (24) Weeks

Main Course Content:

  • Manage the operation of the propulsion plant machinery
  • Plan and schedule operations
  • Operation surveillance performance assessment and maintaining safety of propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery
  • Manage fuel, lubrication and ballast operations
  • Manage operation of electrical and electronic control equipment
  • Manage troubleshooting, restoration of electrical and electronic control equipment and operation condition
  • Manage safe and effective maintenance and repair procedures
  • Detect and identify the cause of machinery malfunctions and correct faults
  • Control trim, stability and stress
  • Ensure safe work practice
  • Use Leadership and managerial skills

N.B Required Experience for 750 KW and 3,000 KW Propulsion Power Licenses

  • Chief Engineer– not less than thirty-six (36) months
  • Second Engineer-not less than twenty-four (24) months

Successful completion of all academic assessments- will lead to a Second/Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency.
