Ratings Forming Part Of An Engineering Watch

PURPOSE

This course provides knowledge and understanding required for the Ratings Forming Part of an Engineering Watch (oiler, fireman, junior engineers or wipers standing engineering watches) on vessels to which the full effects of the STCW apply.

OBJECTIVE

This course is designed to meet the requirements of the STCW 78, as amended, Regulation III/4. On completion of this course trainees would possess sufficient knowledge of marine engineering support level duties and responsibilities to qualify after a minimum of six (6) months of approved seagoing service performed on a vessel of at least 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) that meets the criteria of reference.

Duration:

  • Three (3) weeks without experience
  • One (1) week with experience

  • Carry out a watch routine appropriate to the duties of a rating forming part of an engine-room watch

​​Understand orders and be understood in matters relevant to watchkeeping duties for keeping a boiler watch:

  • Maintain the correct water levels and steam pressures
  • Operate emergency equipment and apply emergency procedures
