About MatPal

MATPAL MARINE INSTITUTE INC.

The purpose of Maritime Education and Training (MET) is to supply trained manpower for the world’s ships. MET of seafarers is important for the effective and efficient operations of the global sustainable Maritime Industry. In this regard, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has focused its attention on the need for attracting, retaining, and training qualified seafarers (IMO, 2013). MATPAL Marine Institute Inc. (MPMI), for twenty-four (24) years (1999 – present), has included this as a core competence in the training and development of seafarers, industry professionals, and new entrants into the Maritime & Oil and Gas Industry.  In so doing, we adhere to the commonly agreed principles for establishing maritime education and training as outlined by the IMO, based upon the following considerations:

  1. Application of Internationally recognized standards including Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW);
  2. Meeting local requirements outlined by the Maritime Administration of Guyana (MARAD) and other Stakeholders;
  3. Close cooperation with the shipping industry to meet their requirements under the Shipping Act of Guyana – swift adaptation of new education and training technologies;
  4. Updating programmes to cover new requirements and technologies applied to the shipping industry – Providing continuous education for industrial updating;
  5. Balancing and matching academic studies and on-board training, taking into consideration licensing authority’s requirements.

Developments within the growing Offshore Industry and the standards associated with these activities are all factors that are contributing significantly to upping the ante as it relates to maritime education training.

MatPal Marine Institute Inc. is Guyana’s first maritime Institute, that provides STCW International training. Our target group includes Seafarers seeking to become more qualified, thus enabling them to become employed unction at higher levels both within the maritime and burgeoning oil and gas industry.

The Institute successfully continues to train and certify numerous persons associated with the maritime industry of Guyana and around the Caribbean and has earned a reputation for “promoting excellence through maritime training” throughout the delivery of this vital service.  On average, in excess of one hundred and fifty (150) participants spanning both the deck and engine room departments are certified each year.
