Fishing Master License (FML) – Captains & Masters Course

Objective: This course prepares the participant for performing the duties of Captain/Master on board Fishing Vessels

Topics/Modules:

1.  Chart Work And Practical Navigation   

Direction and Co-ordinates; Projection and the Nautical Chart ; Plotting, Dead Reckoning and Position              Obtaining a Position Line; The Sailings          ; Fixing the Position; Tides, Tidal Stream and Tidal Calculations

2.  Instruments For Piloting:  Depth 

3.  Aids To Navigation: 

Major Categories; Buoyage Systems

4.  Collision Regulations

5.  Ship Handling

Introduction; Speed and Course changes; Turning Characteristics; Definitions; Effects of Wind and Current; Definition of Anchoring Terms; Manoeuvring; Squat and Shallow water effect.

6.  Stability  

Definitions and Main Terms; Buoyancy (using graphical representation); Centre of Gravity (using graphical representation)

7.  Navigation Instruments   

RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging); AIS (Automatic Identification System); GPS (Global Positioning System); Echo sounder

8.  Ship Construction

Classification; Principle Ship Dimensions; Load lines; Corrosion; Dry docking; Unshipping a propeller

9.  Cargo Work And Industrial Safety 

Definitions; Parts of a Derrick; Precautions before Entering Tanks or Enclosed Spaces; Cargo Responsibility

10.  Meteorology        

11.  Practical Seamanship And Pollution Prevention    

12.  Emergency Situations 

Various signals used to indicate a “distress” at sea and actions taken on board if it is visually sighted; Understanding the International Code of Signals; Manoeuvres used to rescue a Man Overboard; Actions taken in the event of a pollution

13.  Local Knowledge And Regulations      

Duration: Four (4) weeks

Marking Scheme: 

  • Written Examination – 1 ½ Hours ( 70% Pass Rate)
  • Oral Examination – 1 Hour (90% Pass Rate)

Certification Offered:

Certification of Merit  issued by MatPal Marine Institute

Licence for this course is issued by the Maritime Administration Department of Guyana based on participant successfully passing examination as set out by MARAD

Pre-requisite: An Applicant must be the holder of a Harbour License
